Five Against The Mountain

8 November 2011

Here is the first installment of the Red Wing Shoe Co. “Work is our Work” film series, through which they recognize the skill and dedication of today’s modern craftsmen. This film captures the story of the five skilled craftsmen and their efforts towards building the monument to immortalize the Oglala Lakota war hero, Crazy Horse.
The Crazy Horse monument is a task which will surpass the team’s lifetime. Like all well-crafted achievements, it will not only live on as a tribute to those it represents, but as a tribute to the perseverance of those who built it.

Patrick Pierson and Dan Hundley spent 5 days of filming on location at the monument. The footage was shot entirely on Canon 7D HD-DSLR cameras. This allowed for more lightweight mobility and easier access to some of the peaks which required some sketchy climbing. Motion time-lapse was also a big part of the project. For this, we used a Kessler Cineslider and an Oracle Control System which allowed us to set a controlled automated camera movement while shooting time-lapse.
